# Is it safe to disable system apps on Android? Disabling a system app is reversible and usually safe if the app is optional, such as a duplicate browser or a manufacturer assistant you never use. It is not safe for the launcher, keyboard, System UI, telephony or Play services. ## The tiers slimdroid uses | Tier | Meaning | Advice | | --- | --- | --- | | Critical | The phone stops working without it: launcher, keyboard, System UI, telephony. | Never disable. | | Core | Part of a feature you may use: Bluetooth, NFC, backup, device care. | Disable only if you do not use the feature. | | Judgement call | Useful to some people and not others. | Read the reason, decide, test. | | Bloat | Preinstalled and optional: duplicate apps, partner apps, promotional services. | Safe to disable for most people. | | Your app | Something you installed. | Not debloat material. | | Unknown | Not in the knowledge base. | Leave it alone until you know what it is. | ## Rules of thumb - Disable a few packages at a time, restart, and use the phone for a day before the next batch. - Names containing `provider`, `framework`, `systemui`, `telephony` or `permissioncontroller` are almost always load-bearing. - Prefer disabling over uninstalling; both are reversible but disabling is the simplest to undo. - Keep a list of what you changed. The slimdroid journal records every command and its result. - Back up anything you care about first. "Clear data" has no undo. ## How to undo a mistake 1. Restore the package from the journal in the [slimdroid tool](https://slimdroid.com/app), or run `adb shell pm enable `. 2. If you used uninstall for your user, run `adb shell cmd package install-existing `. 3. If the phone will not boot properly, connect it over ADB and restore the last package you changed; a factory reset is the final option. ### Is it safe to disable Bixby? For most people, yes: Bixby is a Samsung assistant. Features that depend on it, such as Bixby Routines, stop working, and you can switch it back on at any time. ### Can disabling an app delete my data? Disabling keeps the app's data. Clearing data deletes it and cannot be undone. ## Related guides - [How to debloat an Android phone without root](https://slimdroid.com/guides/debloat-android-without-root) - [Android privacy: which apps collect data and how to limit them](https://slimdroid.com/guides/android-privacy-telemetry-apps) - [Android debloat tools compared](https://slimdroid.com/guides/debloat-tools-compared) - [Samsung bloatware: what is safe to disable on a Galaxy phone](https://slimdroid.com/guides/samsung-bloatware-what-to-disable) - [Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO bloatware and ads: what to disable](https://slimdroid.com/guides/xiaomi-redmi-poco-bloatware-ads)
